HOW I DESIGN KITCHENS THAT LAST
Timeless details for the hardest-working room in the house
When it comes to designing a home, the kitchen is one of the trickiest spaces to pull off. It’s where function and beauty collide, and it’s all too easy to make compromises or cut corners that end up feeling regrettable later on. I’ve been guilty of it in my own home. The truth is, a kitchen has to work harder than any other room. It needs to be durable and efficient, but it also sets the tone for daily life. It’s where you’ll likely spend a huge amount of your time, so it should feel like a place you genuinely love being. Getting it right is less about chasing trends and more about making choices that feel lasting, livable, and considered.
My approach is to treat the kitchen like any other room in the house: warm, layered, and lived-in. It should be as cozy and inviting as the living room or the bedroom, not a sterile space full of hard finishes. Over time, I’ve developed a handful of design moves and material choices that help me achieve that balance. These are the elements I almost always weave into a kitchen to ensure it feels timeless, highly functional, and welcoming.
Today I’m sharing some of my go-to tips and tricks for creating a kitchen that you’ll want to spend time in, and that will continue to feel good for the long haul.
